What exactly is procrastination? We have all experienced it at time. Remember the feeling that we are just a little bit stuck or frustrated and it stops us
in our tracks. We just don’t seem to be able to move forward with what we are intending to do.
So where does procrastination come from? The main reason that we suffer from procrastination is fear. That’s it, FEAR! Fear of failure, fear of success, fear
of what other people may say or think. Probably a lot more fears that you could probably think of as well.
By breaking through these fear, we can lighten up a little bit and move past procrastination and start achieving our goals.
The following steps are required to get rid of procrastination.
1. Let go of all your worries. Yeh, right, how do we do that? Sometimes the things we fear are not even valid, it may be things we were told that weren’tcorrect or things we heard as children. Once you take the time to analyse why you are fearful of success, failure or whatever it may be, we often find thatthere is really nothing valid there at all. When you recognise something fearful, just spend some time and look at it, ask yourself why are you afraid andonce you realize the truth about it, you can see that it is probably just a limiting thought and you are now able to let go of it.
2. Stop feeling sorry for yourself! we limit ourselves and cause ourselves to stop growing or succeeding by having a pity party. Stop it! Feeling sorry forus is not at all helpful and will never result in success in both personal or business life. Determine to make a resolution to stop feeling sorry foryourself now and move on. You can do it.
3. We feel that what we are trying to accomplish is just too big and we just can’t get past that thought. Maybe you are trying to look at the big pictureinstead of breaking it down to achieveable step by step bits. Spend some time to work out a plan and break the goal into little bits that you are well ableto do. You will find that you can do it and you will believe that you can achieve it if you just do what you set as a goal for today (that little bit or stepfor that day).
4. Focus is another thing that stops people from achieving and spiraling them into procrastination. Ask yourself, “if not now, when?” Make a decision to doit no matter what and set those step by step bits into action. We often get focused on multiple things and become overwhelmed with it all and toss everythingin. Things we focus on are often not very important. Take for example checking our emails. We go in and click on an interesting message and then spend thenext four hours on links that go from there to a site, and then links on the site to other sites etc. After we realize, we have spend the last four hoursreading interesting stuff but not getting anywhere to reach our goals. I would suggest that you check your emails last thing at night or after you haveachieved your days goals.
5. Make a to-do list to keep on track. This is a winners secret and it is a fact that all successful people make to-do lists and focus on them until they arefinished before taking on extra things. This, if nothing else, is one of the most powerful things you can do to break through your procrastination and soarlike the eagles.
6. Set aside a certain time to accomplish your goals. Even set a timer to keep you on track as well.
7. Just do it! Applying action is one way to get over procrastination. Do just a little every day and you will accomplish your goals. If you just spent 1hour a day in focused actions to accomplish your goal, then you will have spent 30 hours a month and that will make a huge difference to your results.
