Is it possible to have both an optimistic and realistic mindset?

When I say optimistic, I do not mean the annoying and fake "happy-go-lucky" or "smile, everything is going to be great!" attitude.
No, I’m asking is it possible to have the logical kind of optimistic mindset which can accept and deal with the harsh realities of the world, but yet still maintain a balanced (i.e. not overly positive or negative) outlook on life regardless?

Realism must include pessimism, a healthy balance. Knowing when to be pessimistic, and when to be optimistic, makes you realistic, or pragmatic.
I don’t see why not. That’s the best kind of mindset to have.
yes
Plan for the worst. It’s not pessimism, it’s pragmatism.
By doing so I have discovered in myself a person who is virtually impossible to let down, a person who sees each tiny thing as more than I had before and hence a gain.
I shed so many of my desires and since I want so little I rarely have a sense of desire or longing. I found contentment as a result.
I realized that it is better to have little and want little more than to have much and want much more.
In this way I have turned pragmatism into optimism.
In fact, I consider a pessimist to be anything other than wise. To a pessimist nothing ever reaches his "standards" and he is very judgmental.
